武廟(Grand Matsu Temple / Martial Temple)

English Introduction

The Grand Martial Temple, directly across from Chihkan Tower, was built around 1665 during the Koxinga era. It’s Taiwan’s oldest temple dedicated to Guan Di (Guan Yu) — the deified Chinese general revered for loyalty and righteousness, and the only martial temple with official government rites.

The temple retains classic Hokkien-style architecture with red walls and swallow-tail ridges. It connects to the adjacent Grand Matsu Temple (dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu). The antique calligraphy plaque reading “Great Man” (大丈夫) is a prized cultural artifact.
