(Shifen Sky Lanterns)

English Introduction

Shifen, in Pingxi District, is Taiwan’s most famous spot for releasing sky lanterns. Sky lanterns (Kongming Lanterns) originated as military communication tools during the Three Kingdoms era and evolved into a folk tradition of sending wishes to heaven. The annual Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival during the Lantern Festival is an internationally renowned event.

Shifen Old Street’s unique feature is the train tracks running through the middle of the street. Visitors purchase lanterns from shops along the tracks, write their wishes, and release them from the railway — a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Different colors represent different blessings: red (health), yellow (wealth), blue (career), pink (love).
