奮起湖位於阿里山半山腰，海拔約 1,400 公尺，是阿里山森林鐵路中途的重要車站。日治時期因為是蒸汽火車的加水站和旅客用餐站而繁榮，有「南台灣的九份」之稱。

奮起湖便當是台灣最知名的鐵路便當，以滷排骨、醬菜、滷蛋為主，配木盒包裝，是必買必吃的特色。老街長約 500 公尺，除了便當店，還有山葵（wasabi）製品、愛玉、草仔粿等山區特產。名字中的「湖」其實是閩南語「凹地」的意思，並非有湖。

English Introduction

Fenchihu (Fenqihu) sits at about 1,400 meters on the mountainside of Alishan, serving as a key stop on the Alishan Forest Railway. It thrived during the Japanese era as a refueling station for steam trains and a meal stop for passengers, earning the nickname “Jiufen of Southern Taiwan.”

The Fenchihu Bento (lunch box) is Taiwan’s most famous railway bento, featuring braised pork chop, pickled vegetables, and a braised egg in a wooden box. The 500-meter old street also offers wasabi products, aiyu jelly, and mountain specialties. Despite its name meaning “lake,” “hu” in Hokkien actually means “depression/basin” — there’s no actual lake.
