← Day 8 — Sun Moon Lake to Taipei

(Wenwu Temple)

English Introduction

Wenwu Temple, built in 1938, was created by merging two smaller temples that were relocated when Sun Moon Lake’s dam was constructed. The temple faces the lake with mountains behind — the front hall enshrines Guan Di (God of War) and the rear hall honors Confucius (God of Literature), hence the name “Civil and Martial Temple.”

The temple entrance features Taiwan’s largest pair of stone lions, each composed of 365 stones (representing days in a year). The Year Ladder has 366 steps, each engraved with a date and a famous person born on that day — visitors love finding their birthday step.
